BMI is a general screening tool, not medical advice.
What your BMI tells you
Body mass index is a quick way to check whether your weight is in proportion to your height. It is used by doctors, insurers and fitness apps as a first screening step. The number itself matters less than the range it falls into, and the healthy weight band shown here gives you a practical target rather than a single magic number.
If your BMI sits outside the healthy range, small consistent changes beat crash plans: a daily walk, slightly smaller portions and regular sleep move the number steadily. For anything beyond general fitness, talk to a doctor before making big changes.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classed as obese.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. A person who is 1.7 m tall and weighs 68 kg has a BMI of 68 / (1.7 x 1.7) = 23.5.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, so athletes can show a high BMI while being healthy. Waist size, fitness and blood reports matter too, so discuss results with a doctor.
